New wheels are one of the most popular upgrades for a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y. They change the look of the car completely. But Teslas have a few quirks worth knowing about before you buy.
Tesla Model 3 and Model Y fitment
- Bolt pattern: 5x114.3
- Centre bore: 64.1mm
- Fixings: M14x1.5 lug nuts
- Typical offsets: around ET35 to ET45
Model 3 commonly runs 18 to 20 inch wheels. The heavier Model Y usually runs 19 to 21 inch and needs a higher load rating, so always check the load rating on the product page. Browse our Tesla fitment wheels, or pick your model in the fitment finder to see every wheel that fits.
Tyre pressure sensors (TPMS)
Every Tesla has tyre pressure sensors, and newer cars use Bluetooth sensors that are not compatible with older ones. You have two options:
- Move your existing sensors to the new wheels when the tyres are fitted.
- Buy a second set of compatible sensors if you are keeping your original wheels as a separate set.
Without working sensors you will get a warning on the screen, and on cars first used from 2012 a TPMS warning can be an MOT fail.
Will bigger wheels reduce my range?
Usually, a little. Tesla's own figures show lower range on the larger wheel options, because bigger wheels are typically heavier and wider tyres add rolling resistance. To keep the impact small:
- Stay close to the original width and overall tyre diameter. Our tyre size calculator helps.
- Choose flow formed wheels where available. They are typically lighter than standard cast wheels of the same size.
- Keep tyre pressures at Tesla's recommended level.
Style ideas
