If you drive an electric car and you are shopping for wheels, there is one specification that matters more than diameter, offset or finish. Almost nobody talks about it, and getting it wrong is a genuine safety issue rather than a styling one.
Why EVs are different
A battery pack adds somewhere between 300 and 600 kg over an equivalent petrol car. All of that weight passes through four wheels.
Electric motors also deliver full torque from a standstill. There is no clutch slip and no torque converter to cushion it, so the wheel takes the full load the instant the tyre grips. Then regenerative braking sends that load back through the same structure in reverse, on every single lift-off.
A wheel designed for a 1,400 kg hatchback was never asked to do that.
Working out what you need
Find the plate in your driver's door shut. It lists the gross axle weight rating, front and rear. Take the higher figure and halve it. That is the minimum load rating each wheel must carry.
On a Tesla Model Y the rear axle rating is around 1,500 kg, so each wheel needs to handle roughly 750 kg.
Here is the problem
The standard JWL and VIA certifications that most aftermarket wheels carry are commonly rated to 690 kg. That is below what a Model Y needs, and those wheels are sold every day to EV owners who have no idea.
It is not a wide margin either. 690 against a 750 requirement leaves nothing for potholes, a boot full of luggage or five people on board.
What to look for
Ask for the load rating in kilogrammes per wheel, and ask whether it has been independently tested rather than simply stated. Flow formed or forged construction is worth the money on an EV, since cast wheels crack more readily under these loads.
Check the bolt pattern too. Tesla Model 3 and Model Y are 5x114.3 with a 64.1 mm bore, while Model S and Model X use 5x120. Same car maker, different fitment.
And check the TPMS frequency. Most European cars use 433 MHz sensors, and a wheel that will not take yours means another cost.
Size affects range, measurably
Tesla quotes 750 km on 18 inch wheels against 691 km on 19 inch for the same car. That is a 59 km difference from wheel choice alone.
If range matters more than looks, stay smaller. Our 19 inch range is the sensible middle ground for most EVs; 20 inch and above starts costing you noticeably.
