The Golf is the most common car we fit wheels to, and the fitment is refreshingly simple once you know it. Here is everything you need.
The specification
Every Golf from the Mk5 (2003) through to the current Mk8 uses a 5x112 bolt pattern with a 57.1 mm centre bore. That covers the GTI, GTD, R and standard cars alike, and it is shared with the Audi A3, Skoda Octavia and SEAT Leon of the same generations.
The Mk4 and earlier are different: 5x100, also 57.1 mm bore. Worth checking which you have, because a 5x112 wheel will not fit a Mk4.
Sizes that work
17 inch is the comfortable choice, usually 7.5 or 8 inches wide with a 225/45 tyre. Best ride quality and the cheapest tyres by a distance.
18 inch is the most popular, typically 8 inches wide with 225/40. Sharper handling, still liveable on British roads.
19 inch, usually 8.5 inches with 235/35, looks the best and rides the firmest. Fine on a Mk7 or Mk8 with adaptive dampers, noticeably harder on a standard car.
20 inch fits but we would not recommend it on a daily Golf. The sidewall is too short for British potholes and we have replaced enough cracked rims to say so.
Offset
Factory offset is ET45 to ET51 depending on model. Anything from ET35 to ET45 fits without drama. Below ET35 you are into arch clearance territory, particularly on lowered cars.
The two mistakes people make
The first is spigot rings. Most aftermarket wheels have a 66.6 mm bore because that suits Audi and Mercedes. On a Golf's 57.1 mm hub you need 66.6 to 57.1 rings, or you will chase a steering vibration forever. We wrote a full guide to spigot rings if you want the detail.
The second is buying Audi-fitment wheels without checking the bore. An A4 wheel is 5x112 and will bolt on, but its 66.5 mm bore needs the same rings.
