Every autumn we get the same question: is it worth buying a second set of wheels just for winter? For most drivers who fit winter or all-season tyres, the answer is yes. Here is why, and how to pick the right set.
Why a second set makes sense
- Faster, cheaper swaps. Swapping complete wheels takes minutes. Having tyres removed and refitted on the same rims twice a year costs more every time.
- Protect your best wheels. Road salt, grit and potholes are hard on alloys. Keep your summer set away from the worst of it.
- Cheaper tyres. Many drivers drop one inch in diameter for winter. Smaller wheels mean taller sidewalls, more pothole protection and usually lower tyre prices.
What size should a winter set be?
Going down one inch (for example from 19 to 18 inch) is the classic winter choice. The one rule you cannot break is brake clearance: performance models with bigger brakes need a minimum wheel size. An Audi RS3, for example, needs 19 inch or larger. Which finish copes best with winter?
Solid painted finishes such as gloss black, silver or gunmetal are the easiest to live with in winter. Machined or diamond-cut faces look fantastic, but if the lacquer is chipped, salt can get underneath. If you choose a machined finish, wash the wheels regularly and touch up any chips quickly. Don't forget the extras
- TPMS sensors. If your car has tyre pressure sensors, your winter set needs its own sensors or the warning light will stay on. On many cars first used from 2012, that warning light is an MOT fail.
- Bolts and spigot rings. Aftermarket wheels usually need 60° taper seat bolts, and spigot rings if the wheel's centre bore is bigger than your hub. Find both in our wheel accessories.
- Storage. Clean and dry the off-season set before storing it, and keep it out of the damp.
